The Automatic Beat Verge

We often hear about how one cannot get a mechanism into exact beat with this verge. While it is a goal, it was never the intent that one needed to achieve perfect beat with the auto beat mechanism.

It came about from a demand from the clock companies such as Miller and Sligh that the customer could start the clock himself. The idea is to take the pendulum to one side and let it go. If it keeps running then it is a success. Maybe it will take a couple of tries. It will rarely be in exact beat.

The companies had different patents and some were better than others. If the verge is too loose on the Hermle, tighten the front part of the arbor into a vise and put a hole punch over the back end and tap it down. There is a coiled spring inside the plastic cowling.

TIP: when ordering a Hermle 451 unit it is important to know if it is the new auto beat style with the suspension post up on an A frame (the default model) or the older style with the suspension post level with the top of the movement (DBL). We also have it with the high post and manual beat set (DB). If you do not specify then you will receive the default model.
